A Visualization of Jazz Sensations: A Study by Emily Payne

I created this system by relating color to emotion, informing my use of shape through written music, and Gestalt’s principles for layout. By using Jazz definitions of musical arrangement, I created compositions to represent each term in this emotive style of music. I assigned a color to each instrument, further highlighting the sonic qualities through the sense of vision. I created these pieces to transform sound and emotion into a visible, tangible format. The goal was to show the ways in which we collectively recognize music, and how it connects us.
